Check in the House of Bethlehem

Today, I checked into the House of Bethlehem, a Catholic care project that helps people struggling with addiction to reintegrate into normal life. I had an inspiring meeting with Anne, the coordinator of the house, and Artis, a former alcoholic and gambling addict who has overcome his addiction.
Recently, the clients here built a chicken coop and enjoy the fresh eggs they produce themselves. It's a great example of how they try to live off their own talents and efforts. Anne explained that when people accept help and truly want to break free from their addiction, they often start by downplaying it: “My addiction wasn't that bad; I didn't hurt anyone.”
But it's crucial for them to realize that they mainly hurt themselves. To get out of it, they need motivating resources - both internal and external. In the program, they learn to maintain a normal daily rhythm and are encouraged to appreciate and develop hobbies like painting, reading, or making music.
During my visit, they were working on making bee frames for honey production in the day program - a creative and practical activity. The beauty of life flourishes when people truly thrive. Even those who are already clean stay connected and celebrate successes together now and then. The house has a large hall specifically for such festive activities.
